An Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) is a compact power system with a gas turbine engine that operates independently of the main engines on aircraft. Its primary role is to supply the electrical power, pressurized air (pneumatic power) and, in some cases, hydraulic power required on the ground and in flight. The APU enables avionics, environmental control units and ground support systems to operate when the main engines are not running, and also provides the power needed to start the main engines.

An ATS is a high-pressure-air starter used to start aircraft gas turbine engines. It converts compressed air—typically supplied by the aircraft’s Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) or by ground support units—into mechanical energy through turbine blades, initiating the main engine’s first rotation (spool-up).
